Obituary for Frederick J. "Fred" Zamperetti

Frederick J. Zamperetti, 71, of Rome passed away suddenly at home on Monday, March 23, 2015.

He was born on October 19, 1943 in Oneida, NY, the son of Catherine Scanlon Zamperetti and the late Fred P. Zamperetti. He was a graduate of Oneida High School, SUNY Oswego and St. Lawrence University. He began his career in education, which spanned 50 years, in Lowville, NY as a teacher and administrator. He then went on to be a building principal at Canajoharie High School, Adirondack High School in Boonville and he retired from Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES in Williamson, NY in 1998. He then began his second career as an interim administrator in various schools in the area: Wayne Central Schools, Westmoreland, Frankfort, Mohawk, Red Creek, Herkimer BOCES, Madison-Oneida BOCES and many grade levels in the Rome City School District. He retired once again from Staley Upper Elementary on December 31, 2014.

Fred married Ellen Novak on January 31, 1995. He is survived by his wife, his mother Catherine, his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Nancy O’Brien Zamperetti; his children John and Lisa Madis Zamperetti and their children Anna and Alex (Oneida, NY), Ben and Jill Zamperetti Heintz and their children Sophie and Nick (Sherrill, NY), Ben and Meghan DePaul Pokines and their daughter Charlotte (Rome, NY); his nephew Brien and Michelle Chuk Zamperetti and their children Siena and Luca and his niece Kiernan Zamperetti. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Charlotte Novak (Bloomingburg, NY) and brothers and sisters-in-laws: Tom Novak and his sons Miles and Jonah (Boston, MA), Paul Novak (Greenville, SC) and his children Jeff and Emily, Barbara Novak (Madrid, Spain), Steve and Claire Novak Salo and their children Serena, Maddie and Warren (West Winfield, NY), Tom and Janet Novak Hanley and their children Taylor and Morgan (Bloomingburg, NY) and John and Jill’s mother, Judy, and her brother Donnie Witt.

He was predeceased by his father Fred, his grandparents John and Caroline Bozzone Zamperetti and James and Marie Jock Scanlon and their son Donald, his Aunt Elizabeth Zamperetti, his father-in-law Richard Novak, a sister-in-law Sue Novak and a brother-in-law Juanele Camacho.

Fred enjoyed playing golf anywhere but especially at Carlowden Country Club and in the Pinehurst, NC area. He was a Past Exalted Ruler (PER) at the Lowville Elks Lodge and was involved in the FCCLA/FHA at the state level. He enjoyed spending time at his camp in Lyonsdale, NY and his second home in Seven Lakes, NC. Fred loved spending time with his family, especially golfing with John, Jill, Ben and his brother Don, watching Anna’s plays and Alex’s swim meets, and watching Charlotte play and grow. He also loved his home improvement ideas, woodworking, looking at new cars, trying out new restaurants and the many dogs that wandered through his life. Most of all he enjoyed spending every day and doing everything together with his loving wife, Ellen. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be private.

Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Friday from 3 to 7 PM.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Fred’s name to: Wayne Technical and Career Center, 4440 Ridge Road, Williamson, NY 14589 or The Lowville Elks Lodge #1605 Scholarship Fund, 5600 Shady Ave, Lowville, NY 13367.
