Obituary for Helen A. Tormey (Doty)

Helen A. Tormey, 93, of Rome, passed away March 24, 2015.

She was the daughter of Agnes and Willard Doty and born on July 12, 1921 in Rome, NY. Helen graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1939. Helen was united in marriage to William D. Tormey on June 21, 1941; he passed away on April 27, 1996.

She was always a joy filled and kindly soul who brought humor, peace and gentleness wherever she went. She had many life long friends. Helen was devoted to her faith and family, and while still able, she and her husband attended Mass every day at St. Peter’s Church. Helen loved her Bridge Club, Home Bureau, AARP, and St. Peter’s Altar Rosary Society.

She enjoyed her trip to Europe, Hawaii and throughout our country. Helen was a gifted artist and musician, playing piano “by ear”. Dancing, singing and music were her passions, but also enjoyed gardening. Helen spent many years at the YMCA where she was involved in synchronized swimming. Much of her time she also taught swimming and life saving.

Helen is survived by a daughter, Patricia Dolan of Rome; two sons and a daughter in law, Rev. James Tormey of Rome, and Dennis (Cindy) Tormey of Sherrill; grandchildren, Kelly Andrade, Kerry (Jeff) Cannan, Kim (Gary)Bulinski, Michael (Carey) Kohli, Kevin (Stephanie) Kohli, Eric (Lily) Kohli, Marc (Holly) Kohli, and Tyler and Tristan Tormey; 18 great grandchildren, 5 great, great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sheila Kohli; a son in law, Patrick Dolan; and siblings, Williard Doty, Marie Kempf, Jeanette Scott Mazzaferro, and Eileen McCann.

The family would like to thank the Eastern Star, especially the McDonald Unit for their tender care and time they gave Helen. We also have great appreciation for Sr. Rosaire Anne DeMare CSJ, Sr. Juliano DePaul OFM, and Fr. Phil Hearn for their support.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 3 pm at St. Peter’s Church with her son, the Rev. James Tormey, officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call from 1 to 3 prior to the funeral at St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James Street, Rome.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Peter’s Memorial Fund.
