James A. Straney, age 89, cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away peacefully at Little Falls Hospital, Little Falls, NY on Saturday, August 26, 2017, with his loving family at his side.
Born February 19, 1928 in Weirton, WV, he was the son of the late Charles Nicholas and Marguerite (McNamara) Straney. He earned his bachelor’s degree in music from State University of NY Fredonia and master’s degree in music theory and composition from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. On December 27, 1950, he married Patricia Schoff in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Rome.
James taught music for many years in the Westmoreland and Adirondack school districts. He was a long time communicant of St. Mary’s Church. An accomplished composer, musician and teacher, he inspired a love and understanding of music in his many students. He will be greatly missed by family and friends.
James was predeceased by his beloved wife Patricia, who passed away March 20, 2017. Together they shared a blessed union of more than 66 years. He is survived by his children Paul (Mona) Straney, Mary Straney, Lauri Straney, Geoffrey Straney, Patricia Keegan, Daniel (Bethany) Straney, Cathleen Woodul, Charles (Amanda) Straney, Anne Marie Straney, and Joan (David) Turri; and 24 grandchildren as well as several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Also surviving are his sister Abigail (John) Denning and brother Lawrence (Charlene). In addition to his wife, James was predeceased by his son, James Patrick; his sisters Rosarii (Vincent) St. Johns, Sr. F. Bonnie Straney, and Therese Straney; and his brothers Joseph, Charles, and Paul.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at St. Mary of the Assumption Church with the Rev. Philip A. Hearn officiating. The family will receive visitors at the church an hour before the Mass. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery immediately following Mass.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s Parish Memorial Fund.
