Obituary for Laurence J. "Mac" McCann

Laurence J. “Mac” McCann, age 90, of the Town of Lee, passed away on October 26, 2017 at home, with his loving daughter, Mary, hugging him as he passed.

Mac was born on July 26, 1927 to Margaret McCann. He graduated from high school in 1945 and was drafted into the Army and transferred to the Air Force where he retired from in 1966. On June 7, 1956, he married the former Pauline Shepard in Rome, where they shared 36 years together before her passing on June 8, 1992. After his retirement from the Air Force, he began working at the Rome Developmental Center as an aide. While working, he attended nursing school in Marcy and went on to receive his Bachelor’s degree in nursing from SUNY Oneonta. Laurence retired from the Rome DDSO on July 25, 2012 as a Nurse Administrator working in quality assurance.

Laurence and Pauline were world travelers and traveled to 31 different countries including Ireland, Italy, Greece, Germany, Ukraine, and the continent of Africa, just to name some favorites.

Laurence is survived by his beloved daughter and her sons, Mary Burdick (Rick Vertucci) of Rome, Joshua Burdick of West Palm Beach, FL, Matthew Burdick of Albany, Kevin Burdick of Amsterdam; a son and daughter in law and their children, Laurence and Rhonda McCann of VA, and Joey and Megan McCann of VA; as well as many special friends, especially Dick Petrowski and Andy Spellicy; and his feline companion, Otis.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 1 PM at St. Paul’s Church with the Rev. Robert L. Kelly officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Tuesday from 11 AM to 12 PM before the funeral.
