Donald C. Raymond, Sr., age 95, of Rome, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2018 at Bethany Gardens, surrounded by his loving family.
Don was born in Rome on July 5, 1922 to the late Michael and Mary Krug Raymond. He attended St. Mary’s School graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1941. and attended the Utica School of Commerce. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Don was a graduate of the Utica School of Commerce and worked for Underwriters Laboratories for 38 years, retiring in 1983. On June 25, 1949, he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Irene F. Keller, and enjoyed life together for nearly 69 years.
Don loved baseball; he played for RFA, the Rome Twilight League, coached little league, and umpired from 1948-1965. He enjoyed his summers at Brantingham Lake spending time with family, boating, golfing, and working on the camp. He was a member of Smith Post, the Rome VFW, and the Elks Club.
Don is survived by his loving wife, Irene; a daughter and son in law, Mary Lynn and Tim Schmandt of Rochester; two sons and daughters in law, Chuck and Mary Ellen Raymond of Saratoga Springs, and Tim and Debra Raymond of Niantic, CT; eight grandchildren, Jason, Sara, Elizabeth, Matthew, Lindsay, David, Kevin, and Kimberly; and 5.8 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings, Genevieve, Margaret, Bill, and Jim.
A special thanks goes out to the Bethany Gardens staff on the 5th floor who took such loving care of Don.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday at 11 AM at Transfiguration Church with the Rev. Paul F. Angelicchio officiating. Burial will be private.
Relatives and friends may call at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, on Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association or the Rome Rescue Mission.
