Obituary for Norman Ford "Norm" Spencer

Norman Ford "Norm" Spencer
Norman Ford Spencer, age 87 years, a resident of Rome, New York passed away on December 22, 2017 in Sun City West, Arizona.

Norman Spencer was born on May 5, 1930 in East Liverpool, Ohio, the son of Ford and Opal Spencer. He grew up in Weirton, W.V and graduated from Follansbee High school in 1949 where he met his wife of 65 years, Mary Ferrante Spencer. They were married in St. Anthony’s Church, Follansbee, W.V. on May 5, 1952. He joined the United State Air Force in 1950 and received his honorable discharge in 1954. He worked on a B-29 squadron as an aircraft electrical technician and continued that job in the USAF civil service for several years, and later in life returned to USAF civil service duty as an engineer, retiring with 21 years of service in 1990. He also attended Utica College studying physics. Norm was a gadget-man. He could fix anything and everything and was particularly known for his expertise as the electric remote golf caddy fixer for dozens of members of Teugega Country Club. Total cost for repair: One bottle of scotch. During various intervals Norman Spencer pursued a vast array of business, political and public interests. He was an Oneida County Legislator “big” (R) for eight years, and later was appointed Deputy Commissioner for Aviation. Norm was a private pilot and a member of Aircraft Owners Pilots Association completing his first solo flight on September 8, 1983. His passion for aircraft and flying never left him. In 2003, while driving from Phoenix to Tucson, Arizona Norman and Mary visited the Pima Air and Space Museum. He was drawn to a particular aircraft, a B-29 and upon inspection of its serial number 44-70016 Norm was stunned that he had found the original B-29 from Griffiss AFB his crew worked on over 50 years before. Norm commented, “I can still see ‘Red’ Pfrimmer painting “Dopey” on the side. Jim Bentley and I would be timing the “mags” while Evo Gambone and Ed Kozak were changing out an engine. And, of course Al Cresson would be hanging around somewhere”.

Norman Spencer and his wife, Mary Spencer established the original Colonial Restaurant in 1966, and Norm and his son Bruce Spencer established Lake Delta Electric in 1980. Norman was an avid snowmobiler and was an inaugural member of the “Trail Busters” snowmobile club.

But, of all of Noman’s passions golfing was the river that flowed through his bones. Norm was Rome City Amateur Golf Champion, A Flight in 1978, and a longtime member of Teugega Country Club where he scored a hole-in-one in 1985; and also holds the course record for hitting the most balls on the practice range. Norm lived golf on the course, in print and on TV; he never tired of discussing the topic of golf or perfecting a new swing move.

Norman Spencer was predeceased by his son Kirk Spencer in 2013. Surviving members of his family are his wife Mary Spencer, Rome; and two sons, Mark Spencer of Rome, and Bruce Spencer of Tucson, AZ and Rome; and nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

To many Norman Spencer was an icon. He lived his life with integrity and was the first person to offer a hand to help a person with a problem. His easy laugh endeared to those that met him, and he adopted every one of his children’s friends. To Norman Spencer family meant “the Big Tent,” and anyone that was a friend was a part of his extended family.

A Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev Robert L. Kelly, will be held Wednesday at 10:00 am at St Joseph’s Church in Lee Center. Burial will be in in Evergreen Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, Tuesday 4 to 7 PM
