John M. Domagal, Jr., age 75, passed away unexpectedly on July 23, 2018, at home
He was born April 20, 1943, in Rome, a son of the late John M. Sr., and Helen Skwarek Domagal. He graduated from St. Aloysius Academy and attended Utica College, where he was a member of Alpha Delta Epsilon fraternity. After leaving college early, John worked at G.E. in Utica and bartended at Coalyard Charlies in Rome. On July 6, 1979, he was united in marriage to the former Toni Merkel at St. Mary’s Church, Rome. John later returned to college at MVCC and graduated with honors from SUNY Poly. He worked as a systems analyst at Madison Oneida County BOCES.
John’s passion in life was golf. He scored two holes in one and was a member of Rome Country Club for 45 years and was “the tsar” of the Monday Night League and Tuesday Racquetball League. The past ten years, John and Toni spent winters in Myrtle Beach playing many rounds of golf with Ron and Mary Symanski. He was an avid Cleveland Indians and Syracuse University fan.
John is survived by his wife, Toni; a brother, Mike; sister in law, Trudy (R. P. Davis) Foster; brother in law, Todd (Jane) Merkel; niece, Stacy (Joe) Mare; nephews, Joe Ora and Rob Merkel; and great nephew Brandon Mare; and an aunt, uncle and cousins. Most importantly, John leaves many, many golf buddies and “The Group”. John was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Richard.
There will be a Celebration of John’s Life, on Monday July 30, 2018, from 10am to 12 noon at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
