Obituary for Raymond S. "Ray" Loomis II

Raymond S. "Ray" Loomis II
Raymond S. Loomis II, age 71, of Westernville, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2018, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

He was born August 15, 1946, in Utica, a son, of the late Raymond S. Sr., and Ida Hughes Loomis. He graduated from Westmoreland Central School and MVCC with multiple degrees. Ray married Linda Hubal on January 1, 2004. He worked at Rome Cable Corp for many years and finished his working career at the Utica Rescue Mission.

Ray loved the outdoors and surrounding himself with nature. Exploring the Adirondacks and making visits to the Blue Mountain Museum while stopping for a meal at the Ohio Hotel was a weekend favorite. Ray was often found tinkering in his barn restoring old wooden canoes and perfecting his craft at caning chairs. After retirement, Ray spent most of his evenings on the back porch with his wife Linda listening to the creek in their backyard, and ending the evening with a bowl of ice cream and the challenge of a puzzle. Ray's attention to detail became a point of humor among the family and any toy broken by a grandchild was handed to him to desperately save. Ray was a gun enthusiast whose collection was in impeccable condition. Not only did he have many hobbies, he was a true patriot who served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He made a point to remind all those around him that he was a proud American. If it didn't say "Made in America" Ray made every effort not to buy it! Ray became an important figure in his grandchildren’s lives. To them, he was a teacher and a mentor. Ray absolutely adored his wife Linda, loved his children dearly and looked forward to seeing his grandchildren. Rays happiest days were spent at home surrounded by family and friends. He will be missed dearly.

Ray is survived by his wife, Linda; a daughter, Jessica E. Loomis of Yorkville; a son, David R. Loomis of Rome; step-daughters, Jessica Olbrys of New Hartford, and Amanda and Kyle Stevens of New Hartford; stepsons, Matthew Olbrys of New Hartford, and Joshua and Marisa Olbrys of Westmoreland; two brothers and sisters in law, Raymond S. Jr., and Margaret Loomis of Rome, and Carl and Charlotte Loomis of Camden; and 6 grandchildren, He was predeceased by a sister, Carol Sharpe.

The funeral service will be held Friday at 3:00 PM, at Barry Funeral Home, 807, West Chestnut Street. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Friday 1 to 3 PM, prior to the funeral service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Westernville Volunteer Fire Department, Adirondack Experience at Blue Mountain Lake or Mars Hill Christian Radio in Syracuse.
