Marguerite L. O’Connell, age 89, of the Town of Lee, passed away peacefully on August 31, 2018 with her family by her side.
Marguerite was born in Mohawk, NY on January 16, 1929 to the late Carl and Ruth Elliot Laumeister. She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1947. On April 28, 1951, she was united in marriage to Edward P. O’Connell at Our Lady of the Rosary Church; a blessed union of 65 years until his passing on September 26, 2016. Marguerite worked in the Rome City School District retiring in October 1987.
Marguerite loved baking and had a strong Catholic faith. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Lee Center where she volunteered for various activities. She also was an active and strong supporter of Rome Catholic Schools. Marge and Ed were in attendance for many of their children and grandchildren activities, including many sporting events.
Marguerite is survived by a daughter and son in law, Kathryn and Scott Willis of Camillus; three sons and daughters in law, Michael and Jill O’Connell of Camillus, Kevin and Kay O’Connell of Pine, CO, and Daniel and Jody O’Connell of Rome; six grandchildren, Meghan (Justin), Matthew, Lauren (Duke), Christopher, Aimee, and Jaden; and two great grandsons, Derek and Zac. She was predeceased by two sisters, Dorothy Bennett and Helen Ross.
The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful staff at the Terrace at Woodland for the excellent care and compassion that Marge received as a resident for almost two years. The staff at the Residential Health Care Facility at Rome Hospital provided wonderful care and support for Marge and her family.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 12 PM at St. Joseph’s Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the church from 11 am to 12 noon prior to the funeral.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street.
