Obituary for Alfred J. Zeller Sr.

Alfred J. Zeller, Sr., age 85, of Verona, passed away peacefully on March 17, 2015 at Rome Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

Alfred was born on July 18, 1929 to the late Gotfried and Louise Grunenwald Zeller. He attended the Boonville Schools. He began working at Utica Knit, where he would meet the love of his life, the former Arlyn Butler. On September 30, 1950, they were united in marriage at St. Bernard’s Church in Waterville, NY; a blessed union of 54 years until her passing on April 30, 2004. Alfred later worked at B&F Diary and he retired in 1992 from B.S. McCarey Construction Co.

Alfred was a loving father and grandfather and enjoyed the time spent with his family. He was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ.

Alfred is survived by three daughters and a son in law, Alane and Jospeh Foley, Bonnie Monjak, and Arlyn Zeller all of Rome; three sons and daughters in law, Alfred Jr. and Patricia Zeller of Rome, Alan and Laurie Zeller of Waynesboro, VA, and Robert and Tammy Zeller of Verona; nine grandchildren and five great, grandchildren; three sisters, Lydia Marcy, Bertha Brownell of Boonville, and Hilda LoRusso of Rome; and a special nephew, John Waliszewski. He was predeceased by four sisters and seven brothers in law, Frieda and Rudolph Glur, Rosa and John Waliszewski, Clara and Donald Platt, Martha and Clifford Platt, William Marcy Sr., Art Brownell, and Anthony LoRusso; a beloved nephew, Cliff Platt Jr.; and a son in law, Christopher Monjak.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 AM from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery in the spring.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 7 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
