Obituary for Dominick J. Nuccio

Dr. Dominick J. Nuccio

Rome, New York

Dr. Dominick J. Nuccio, age 89, of Rome, passed away peacefully on November 18, 2015.

He was born on June 17, 1926, in Utica, to the late Joseph and Elizabeth Gaetano Nuccio. Dominick was a graduate of Proctor High School. Being very active in sports, he spear-headed Proctor High School's first gymnastics team. In 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and joined the boxing team at Fort Brag, NC, becoming the light-weight champion. He continued boxing on the USS Morton, in Japan and the Philippine Islands, entertaining troops and winning many titles. On the island of Cebu, Japan, Dr. Nuccio served in the medical Corp of the 246th battalion treating American GIs and Japanese civilians.

After his honorable discharge in 1946, he returned home and married the former Yolanda Valerio; a blessed union of 62 years until her passing on September 29, 2012. His greatest joy was spending time with his beloved wife and family. Summers were spent at their Oneida Lake camp with the kids and grandchildren, where they welcomed relatives and friends to share good food, drink and make memories He was a genuine example of how a man should live his life.

His passion for health care and athletics led him to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, IA. He earned his doctorate, relocated to Rome and worked for over 65 years at his private practice. Dominick's love for people and the profession was demonstrated by his treatment and care of his patients and friends. He was as much a healer as a mentor, teacher, counselor, and true gentleman.

He enjoyed shooting competitive skeet throughout New York State and Canada. He was a lifelong member of the Clinton Fish and Game Club where he enjoyed great friendships and comradery. He loved to hunt and fish with his best friend and son, Douglas.

Dominick is survived by his two daughters and sons in law, Elaine and Gary Ruzanski of North Bay, and Liz and Andre Bertrand of Lee; a son and daughter in law, Dr. Douglas and Tamara Nuccio of North Bay; and a daughter law, Andrea Nuccio of Webster, a sister, Mary Desjardins of Cleveland, NY; grandchildren, Ritch and Kirk Nuccio, Danielle, Dominick, Kirstin, and Kelly Nuccio, Josh and Jake Ruzanski, and Lauren and Kimberly Donovan; two great granddaughters, Kiley Nuccio and Naiara Nottingham; and a sister in law, Rose Nuccio of Utica. He was predeceased by a son, Dr. Robert F. Nuccio, and two brothers and a sister in law, Salvatore and Nettie Nuccio and Prosper Nuccio.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 AM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM at St. Paul's Church, with Rev. Robert Kelly officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
