Obituary for Ian J. Marwick

Ian J.  Marwick
Ian J. Marwick, age 89, formerly of Maple Lane, Lee Center, died peacefully on August 18, 2017.

Ian was born December 17, 1927, in Rome, a son of the late James H. and Mary Edwards Marwick. He was predeceased by a brother, Gordon E. Marwick in 1972, and a niece, Linda, in 2000. He attended Rome Public Schools, graduating in the Class of 1946, and Cornell University in the Class of 1953, receiving Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Electrical Engineering. He was employed by Rome Cable Corporation for 32 years, retiring in 1985, as Vice President of Engineering and Development. He then went to work for the Air Force as an electrical engineer, serving with the 485th Engineering Installation Group at Griffiss AFB, retiring in 1992. Ian was an active participant in many professional engineering organizations, including, being a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society, the Insulated Cable Engineers Association and the Rome Academy of Sciences. While at Rome Cable, he authored numerous technical papers regarding the design, manufacture and testing of electrical power and communication cables.

Ian was an avid skiing, boating and golfing enthusiast. He was past commodore of the Lake Delta Yacht Club, a member of Teugega Country Club and a charter member of the Griffiss Ski Club. He also served as a board member of the Rome Family Y, Rome Cable Corp. and Spargo Wire Company. He was a member of the Advisory Board of the Salvation Army and a board member of the Rome Cemetery Association.

A graveside service will be held at Rome Cemetery on Monday, Aug. 28th at 11:00 am for Ian's friends and family.

There are no calling hours.

A celebration of Ian’s life will be held at a date and time to be announced. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rome Family Y, Jervis Public Library, the Rome Community Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
