Obituary for Quintin Edward "Quint" Barry

Quintin Edward "Quint" Barry
Quintin Edward Barry, age 93, was gifted with eternal life on October 24, 2017.

He was born in Rome, a son of the late Thomas and Isabel Williams Barry.  Quint was an alumnus of St. Aloysius Academy.  In June of 1944, he wed his “bride,” Doris Jeanne Gifford; they were blessed to share 73 years together.  Quint was the proud father of Mary Elizabeth {Betsy} Knapp {Bill} of Smithfield, VA., and Mary Jacqueline {Jackie} LaBella {Felix Jr.} of Utica.  He was a devoted grandfather to Aimee Knapp Sullivan {David}, William Barry Knapp {Annie}, Felix LaBella III, and Desiree LaBella; also blessed with four great grandchildren, Clare, Erin, and Ryan Sullivan, and Ellie Knapp.  He is also survived by his sister, Joan Weinheimer of Syracuse; many nieces, nephews, and friends, in particular, Tony Levadoti of Rome.

Quint was predeceased by brothers, Thomas {Tom}, John {Jack}, Robert {Mac} and Father Louis Barry {Butch}.  They all cherished their Irish heritage, sharing a love of sports {especially Notre Dame and the Boston Red Sox}, while having a beer together.  Quint loved sports, both playing and watching football, basketball and baseball.  Quint never met a stranger, and loved to talk and tell stories to anyone willing to listen.

Quint was a lifelong resident of Rome, a member of St. Peter’s Church and its’ Men’s Club.  His faith carried him through many illnesses and hardships.  Quint was a steadfast Democrat.  He was a Rome Democratic City Committeeman for 40 years, Democratic City Chairman for 8 years, President of the Rome Common Council for 8 years and Rome City Clerk for 2 years.  He retired as assistant to the Presiding Judge for the NYS Racing and Wagering Board.  He was a member of the Rome Elk’s Club, and Rome City and Oneida County Democratic Clubs.

Quint’s heavenly journey was a blessing to be reunited with his beloved family and lifelong friends who predeceased him.  His family thanks God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent with him.

Quint’s family extends their sincere appreciation to the staff of the Chestnut House at the Sitrin Healthcare Center.

Funeral services will be held Monday 12:45 PM from the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street, and a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated by Rev. Philip A. Hearn, at 1:30 PM at St. Peter’s Church.  Burial will be in M. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home Sunday 3 to 6 PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s Church Memorial Fund or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Everyone is invited to wear green in honor of Quint’s Irish heritage.
