Mary C. Mortis, age 80, of Rome, passed away peacefully, on December 30, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born September 22, 1937, in Rome, a daughter of the late Charles E. and Catherine Thomas Hayes, and educated in Rome schools. Mary was united in marriage to Francis Mortis Jr. on January 19, 1957, in Rome; he died May 18, 1999. She worked for many years for the Cletus L. Paine Bus Service. She was a member of the Rome First United Methodist Church.
Mary always has been a wonderful and caring person. She truly enjoyed cooking for all the family Sundays, following and cheering for her children’ and grandchildren’s sports teams and games. She was an avid New York Yankee fan, Yahtzee player and spent her quiet time crocheting. She also loved animals, including her dog, Chico and birds, Myrtle and Oscar.
Mary is survived by her children, Rosellen and John Gray of Rome, Joseph Mortis of Rome, Wonder Mortis of Rome and Timothy Sr., and Patty Mortis of Rome; two sisters and brothers in law, Ruth and Chuck Cadrette of Lee Center, and Gwynneth and David Caldwell of Rome; grandchildren, Jonathan and Benjamin Mortis, Michael, Jr., and Alissa Mortis, Elizabeth and Matthew Steffes, Timothy Mortis Jr., and Brian Grower; and a great granddaughter, Alexis Grower and a great grandson, Avery Mortis; also several neices and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Michael Mortis, Sr., three sisters, Leatrice Sherman, Janice Carey and Carol Howard, and a brother, David Hayes.
The funeral service will be held Thursday at 7:00 PM at the Barry Funeral Home, 807 W. Chestnut Street. Burial will be in the spring in Evergreen Cemetery.
Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home, Thursday 4 to 7 PM, prior to the funeral service.
