Ruth E. Yeomans, age 83, of Rome, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2018 at the Rome Memorial Hospital Residential Healthcare Facility.
Ruth was born in Barberton, Ohio on May 5, 1934 to the late William Hane and Lottie Butchart Yeomans. She graduated from Harper Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit, MI and received her Master’s Degree in nursing from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. She retired as a lieutenant colonel from the United States Air Force after 20 years of honorable service to her country. During her Air Force career she served in the Philippines, Japan and several base hospitals in the United States, retiring as the Chief Nurse at the Griffiss Air Force Base Hospital in Rome, NY. Ruth then served as a Federal servant for 10 years as the Director of Quality Services at the Griffiss Hospital until the base closed in 1995.
Ruth was an avid bridge player and belonged to a nurses group who traveled to each other’s locale in order to have binge bridge tournaments. Ruth lived to serve others. She volunteered for several organizations including reception in the Ava Dorfman Senior Center, the Provide-A-Ride program transporting individuals to doctor and hospital appointments throughout the Mohawk Valley, and in the Hospice & Palliative Care Siegenthaler Center as well as providing respit care in hospice patients’ homes. She adored cats and opened her home to one to five rescue cats at any given time. She was also a long time member of the Rome YMCA.
Ruth is survived by her brother and sister in law, Steve (Pam) Yeomans of Grand Ledge MI; nieces and nephews, Kristen, Craig, Matthew, and Lauren; two great-nephews; five great-nieces; a sister in law, Carol (Paul) Yeomans-Phelan; and several relatives in the Wiarton, Canada region. She was predeceased by her beloved parents and a brother, James Yeomans.
Funeral services will be private.
